Raising a Reader

RAR

The Garfield County Public Library is committed to ensuring that every child has access to early literacy opportunities so that they develop the reading skills necessary for school success and thus, success throughout their lives.

Raising A Reader® is an award-winning early literacy program that provides bright red book bags, filled with high-quality children's books featuring artwork, age-appropriate language, and multicultural themes. Raising A Reader® is implemented through library partnerships with childcare centers and other agencies serving children 0-5. It inspires families to "book-cuddle" with their little ones, developing a love of books that lasts a lifetime. Parents participating in the program commit to reading to their children each day.   Children take home new books weekly and their parents, teachers, and caregivers receive information on early literacy skill development. Volunteer storytime readers model good readaloud techniques and build excitement for books by providing monthly storytimes at partnering childcare centers.
