Literacy Outreach History ~ Tutors ~ Students ~ Events ~ FAQ
Literacy Outreach is a local, non-profit agency combating illiteracy in Garfield County, Colorado. Our mission is to teach essential literacy skills to adults. Through professionally trained volunteer tutors, we provide free one-on-one instruction to adults with reading skills below the 4th grade level. Achieving a functional literacy level leads to improved employment status, enhanced self-esteem and greater self-sufficiency. Literacy Outreach serves students such as Reyna, a single mom from Chihuahua, Mexico. Her commitment to learning English has been an example for other students. Reyna and her dedicated tutor often met for class twice a week for two hours a session. She was promoted from cashier to Assistant Manager and is now the manager of a local gas station and convenience store. Reyna went from being a shy learner to a teacher of other students. She often translates for new workers and encourages them to speak English at work. Reyna has also referred her co-workers for tutoring.
Want to help Literacy Outreach but can't volunteer as a tutor? You can still support our efforts by participating in our two main fundraisers, Spellebration and the Glenwood Canyon Shuffle. Glenwood Canyon Shuffle: Race for Literacy!
The 2010 Shuffle is scheduled for Saturday, October 2! The Glenwood Canyon Shuffle Race for Literacy is an annual event to benefit Literacy Outreach. The race includes a half-marathon (13.1 miles) run and relay race (entrants may run the half-marathon as individuals or as members of an up-to-5-person team) and a 5-kilometer (3.1 miles) run/walk. All events take place on the bike path in scenic Glenwood Canyon east of Glenwood Springs. More details and online registration are available on active.com.

Spellebration 2010 took place on March 5, when participants were transported from the Hotel Colorado to Gaie Paree, where love was in the air and the crème de la crème of adult spellers gathered to win bragging rights for the next year! Congratulations to the "KMTS à Trois" team of Jon Banks, Sabrina Whitehouse, and Debbie Knott, sponsored by KMTS Radio, on their victoire! To reach first place, the team spelled both impecunious and chough correctly. Ooh la la! This year's event sponsors included Grand River Construction, Bank of Colorado, Alpine Bank, EnCana, KMTS, Copy Copy, Post Independent, Williams, mpa Consulting Engineers, and the Glenwood Springs Rotary Club. |
