New Castle Branch Library Opens April 14
The New Castle Branch Library will reopen on April 14, 2012, with a Grand Re-Opening Ceremony that will start at 10 a.m. Join us for refreshments and giveaways until 2 p.m. The new library will feature a beautiful new fireplace and reading area, local history room, teen area, interactive children's area and new community meeting room. There are still donor opportunities at the new library. Contact Kelsy Been at 970-625-4270 or by email at kbeen@gcpld.org for more information. The temporary branch, next door to Subway and City Market at 820 Castle Valley Blvd., will close on March 24 so library staff can move back to the location at 402 West Main and get settled in their new building. The new library was designed by Michael Hassig and Brad Zeigel of A4 Architects and is being built by B&H Construction.
The Silt Branch Library will break ground in March 2012 and will open in late 2012. The architect is Paul Trementozzi of Oz Architecture and the contractor is FCI. The building features an expandable meeting room to accommodate larger events, as well as two study rooms, unique children's and teen spaces, and a plaza between the existing Silt Town Hall and the new library. The plaza will feature 28 concrete "books" and donors may name their favorite title and author as part of the installation. Contact Kelsy Been for more information.
The new library in Glenwood Springs at the corner of Cooper Avenue and Eighth Street is wrapping up design development with architect Dennis Humphries of Humphries Polis Architecture and FCI performing the construction. The new library will have a parking structure underneath and a second floor above, both owned by Colorado Mountain College (CMC). A second parking structure will be constructed at the corner of Ninth and Cooper by the Glenwood Springs Downtown Development Authority and the City of Glenwood Springs. The project calls for a new 14,000 square foot library on the ground floor, a community plaza, and a second floor that will be unfinished, providing future expansion space for the library and CMC. The library will feature terrific children's and teen areas, a quiet reading room with a fireplace, four study rooms and a large community meeting room. The project is slated to break ground in April 2012.
The District hired Willis Pember Architects and Humpries Poli Architecture to design the new library for Carbondale. Currently the project is in design development, and we have received some great ideas from the public at three community meetings. Special emphasis will be placed on engaging community artisans to contribute to the project. The new library will be a 13,000 square foot facility at the corner of Sopris and Third Avenue. We hope to break ground by next summer, with a completion date of mid-2013. Currently the project includes an outdoor reading patio, three study rooms, a joint community room/quiet reading area, and special children's area. The Mount Sopris Historical Society is exploring the possibility of creating a time capsule as part of the project. Watch their web site for more information at www.mtsoprishistoricalsociety.org. The project will be bid out for construction in the late spring.
We are committed to providing safe and efficient facilities and are working to ensure that overall operational costs for the District remain low as we expand our facilities to meet the library needs of the future. We are putting special emphasis on green features and energy efficiency. As always, I value your feedback. Please don't hesitate to share your thoughts, whether through our online contact form, suggestion boxes at all six branch locations, or by email at ashelley@gcpld.org.
