Discover Colorado's Historic Collections

Discover Colorado’s Historic Collections is a one-day workshop that will be presented by the Colorado State Library in partnership with Garfield County Libraries. It will highlight the programs and resources that make our state’s unique history more freely accessible to all. This workshop is free. The morning session is open to all adults and the afternoon is reserved for invited cultural heritage institutions.

Morning Session:
Tools for Community Research • 10 am to 12 pm
In the morning session, history buffs, amateur genealogists, and cultural heritage institutions will receive an introduction to two free resources you can use for researching local historic collections: Colorado Historic Newspapers Collection and the Digital Public Library of America. Both initiatives are supported by the Colorado State Library and made possible through the participation of dozens of Colorado and Wyoming libraries, museums, and archives. We will explore the key features of these resources and how they can enhance any local history research project. The morning session will conclude with a panel discussion of local institutions sharing information about their historic collections.

Afternoon Session:
Resources for Sharing and Promotion • 1 to 3:30 pm
Local cultural heritage institutions will learn about the Colorado State Library programs that can support them as they take their historic collections to the next level and tools to make local historical collections more widely available online. We’ll look at case studies of organizations that are working towards their project goals using statewide programs, and we’ll end with a breakout session to help participants develop roadmaps for their own historic collections.
